In the United States, more and more families are looking for Chinese nannies to care for their children, most likely due to the language advantage these nannies possess.

For Chinese immigrant families in the U.S., a Chinese-speaking nanny can help them pass on Chinese culture and care for their children using traditional Chinese parenting methods.

Furthermore, some parents hope that a nanny can give their children a good start in life and prepare them for the future. A report by the Chinese online news outlet Red Star News states that elite American families believe that having their children learn Mandarin from a young age is very beneficial for their future development.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, many American families are looking for nannies who are fluent in a foreign language. Bay Area 2nd Mom, a local nanny agency, has seen a growing demand in recent years for nannies who speak a foreign language (other than English), and Chinese is one of them.

In New York, Chinese-speaking nannies are in high demand, earning annual salaries that are $20,000 higher than those of typical nannies. Lifestyle Resources, a New York childcare placement agency, revealed that one Chinese woman was sought after by two families and ultimately secured an annual salary of up to $70,000.

Besides hiring a nanny, American children can learn Chinese through several other methods.

Yang Yanli (a pseudonym), a Chinese woman with many years of experience teaching Chinese in the United States, told a reporter from Red Star News that community church schools and immersion language elementary schools in the U.S. offer Chinese language courses. Chinese language courses are also offered as elective courses in middle schools and universities. Yang Yanli added that private Chinese tutors are also available.

Yang Yanli is from Changchun, Jilin Province, and graduated from Beijing Normal University. She immigrated to the United States with her husband more than ten years ago. She has worked as a Chinese teacher in American public schools and community church schools, and has also worked as a private tutor.

"In many parts of the United States, foreign language learning begins in the seventh grade, usually with Spanish or French. In recent years, due to China's development, many schools have added Chinese language courses. Compared to the past, the number of students choosing Chinese courses in universities has also increased," Yang Yanli said.

Yang Yanli also worked as a tutor for a pair of Chinese twins in Maryland. The children's parents had worked in the Reagan administration, and a photo of them with Reagan was displayed on their desk. Besides employing Yang Yanli as a Chinese tutor, the family also hired a Chinese nanny and provided free room and board to a Chinese international student. Yang Yanli said that all of this was to create a good Chinese-language environment for the children.

Like many Chinese immigrants, Yang Yanli also had her own children learn Chinese. Her second child, born in the United States, was sent to a church school to learn Chinese at a young age, as she didn't want her child to forget their mother tongue.

In addition, many American families who adopt Chinese children also have their children learn Chinese.
