What are the pros and cons of maternity centers in the United States?
-
Pros: U.S. postpartum care centers offer excellent environments. Free from the constant advice and scrutiny of parents or relatives, new mothers can rest with greater peace of mind. The care provided is meticulous in every aspect, and specialized professionals are on hand to handle services such as postpartum recovery and rehabilitation.
Cons: The cost is higher than that of hiring a private postpartum nanny. Additionally—and particularly if you only stay for one month—the transition back home in the second month can be challenging; the baby may become fussy or difficult to manage, and both mother and child will need to readjust to the home environment.
My personal recommendation is to hire a private postpartum nanny instead. A nanny provides one-on-one service and will prepare meals tailored to your specific dietary preferences—unlike a care center, which typically serves standardized meals to all residents. Furthermore, if any issues arise, you can communicate directly with the nanny, making for much smoother and more efficient interaction.

For new mothers, there are generally two main options for their postpartum confinement period: staying at a dedicated confinement center or recovering at home.
Compared to recovering at home, confinement centers typically offer 24-hour assistance from professional nurses or doctors. This ensures that any issues concerning the mother or newborn can be addressed promptly, providing a more comprehensive level of care. Furthermore, professional staff at these centers handle the baby's daily routines—such as feeding, diaper changing, bathing, and massage—and guide the baby through developmental exercises like gas-relief routines, visual tracking drills, and head-lifting training to help unlock their innate potential. Some centers even offer nursery services to look after the baby—particularly at night—allowing the new mother to get much-needed rest. In contrast, recovering at home would likely require hiring a professional postpartum nanny to ensure a comparable level of specialized care.
Confinement centers also excel in fostering social interaction and alleviating emotional stress. They frequently organize activities such as parenting workshops and educational classes for mothers, providing opportunities to connect with other new moms, share experiences, make new friends, and avoid feelings of isolation. Conversely, if recovering at home, family members must invest significant time and effort to provide the necessary companionship and support for the new mother.
Regarding postpartum physical recovery, confinement centers typically offer specialized programs for pelvic floor rehabilitation and treatment for diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation), allowing for a seamless, one-stop process covering both confinement care and physical restoration. If recovering at home, however, one would need to visit a hospital or clinic to undergo pelvic floor rehabilitation treatments—a process that can be quite cumbersome due to the need for frequent commuting. Alternatively, one could opt to use a home-based pelvic floor rehabilitation device, which offers greater convenience and privacy.
Having discussed the advantages, let's turn to the downsides. Compared to recovering at home, the most significant drawback of a confinement center is the cost; prices can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yuan, representing a substantial financial burden for average-income individuals or ordinary families. Furthermore, the quality of confinement centers currently on the market varies widely, requiring prospective clients to exercise careful judgment and selection skills. For introverted mothers, a confinement center may feel like an overwhelming social environment—a setting they might find psychologically uncomfortable. Finally, family visits and companionship are generally less convenient than they would be at home, given that a confinement center essentially functions as a temporary residential facility. Furthermore, the quality of postpartum care centers currently on the market varies widely, requiring prospective clients to exercise considerable discernment when making a selection.
There are several key points to consider when choosing to stay at a maternity center in the United States:
1. You must select a legitimate and legally compliant maternity center—particularly when it comes to facilities located within the U.S.
A cautionary example involves numerous individuals, organizations, or agencies based in China that simply rent or own a single residential property within a Chinese-populated enclave in the U.S. Typically run by a husband-and-wife team, these operations serve only two or three expectant mothers at a time.
While such establishments feature a lean staff and lower prices, they possess limited capacity to handle emergencies; should any unforeseen issues arise, they are often ill-equipped to resolve them. Furthermore, the level of care provided to expectant mothers may lack the necessary meticulousness. Although you might save a few thousand dollars, the standards regarding hygiene and facility management tend to be rather rudimentary. This "mom-and-pop shop" model is simply not designed to accommodate a large volume of clients.
Conversely, by choosing a large-scale, legally compliant maternity center—especially one based in the U.S.—you benefit from a dedicated professional staff. This typically includes drivers, chefs, house managers, and other personnel, ensuring comprehensive staffing coverage.
Additionally, both expectant mothers and fathers receive a certain level of personalized attention. For instance, activities are thoughtfully arranged for the mothers—such as outings or Pilates sessions—while fathers are offered recreational opportunities, ranging from sightseeing to various leisure pursuits.
The care provided to expectant mothers is truly comprehensive, covering everything from daily meals to specialized post-natal confinement diets with meticulous attention to detail. Furthermore, dedicated post-natal nannies and medical support staff are assigned to provide constant assistance and companionship.
Large-scale U.S. maternity centers typically pre-select a hospital for the delivery well in advance. They arrange for specialized medical interpreters to accompany you to prenatal check-ups, or they can recommend Chinese-speaking physicians to conduct your examinations, thereby eliminating any potential language barriers in communication.
2. A Professional Legal Team to Safeguard Your Legitimate Interests
When traveling abroad, one’s greatest fear is encountering unexpected trouble—especially given the vast cultural and legal differences between China and the United States.
In the U.S., making excessive noise can be grounds for someone to call the police on you; similarly, simply hanging bedding out to dry outside your home can trigger complaints from neighbors—or even lead to police intervention.
Consequently, reputable U.S. maternity centers prioritize your protection by arranging insurance coverage for you—a measure designed to provide mutual security for both parties. Furthermore, these centers will tailor a comprehensive suite of legal services specifically for you. This includes assistance with the initial U.S. visa application process, as well as subsequent procedures such as registering your child's household residency and obtaining their official U.S. birth certificate; every conceivable aspect is taken into account.
The only potential drawback to giving birth in the United States is the relatively high cost; however, this expense is generally well within the financial means of middle-class families.
