    Martha Stewart, America's Domestic Goddess
    Even prison couldn't break me.
"Every morning, you can see someone wearing a 'Martha Stewart Luxury Cotton Robe,' sipping green tea from a 'Martha Stewart Gift Basket,' and watching 'Martha Stewart Living' on CBS.  Their shopping list might even include a 'Martha Stewart' brand wooden coffee table... This is how Martha Stewart's 'domestic empire' has influenced the lives of the American middle class. And she herself, a girl who grew up in a large, somewhat depressing family, despite having been imprisoned, became a female leader on par with Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton, thanks to her strong mental fortitude and unwavering dedication to her career.  She is now the second wealthiest woman in America, thanks to her vast domestic media empire."

Respect Your Intuition, Follow Your Heart
Young girls should speak their minds and not be afraid of change.
NetEase Women: Facing today's rapidly developing society, how should women, especially young women, make choices?

Martha Stewart: I think first and foremost, you should respect your intuition. A person's intuition often represents their true inner thoughts, and only when you understand your own thoughts can you choose the path that suits you.

NetEase Women: Besides this, are there any other factors that can help women?

Martha Stewart: Education is also very important. When your choices are made with a certain background of knowledge, they are often much more accurate than choices made without preparation. Secondly, it's important to gain broad knowledge. For example, when choosing a school for your child, if you understand the situation of all the surrounding schools, you will know which school is best suited for your child and will allow them to develop fully. Any blind choice is risky. For young women, finding a suitable job is also crucial. Don't be afraid of change. If you force yourself to stay in a job you don't like because you're afraid of change, that's a disaster. I actually think change isn't scary; on the contrary, it's very beneficial. When you complete a change, you've solved a problem and taken another step forward.

NetEase Women: We know that society is still mainly male-dominated. How do you think women should speak up to help the outside world understand them better?

Martha Stewart: I think it's very simple: speak your mind loudly. Don't hesitate or have any reservations. In the workplace, people often talk about the "glass ceiling" (referring to the barriers that limit certain demographic groups (women, minorities) from advancing to senior positions in companies and organizations).  In real life, I don't feel this so-called "ceiling" much, because I never pay attention to it. I believe that when you have a firm belief in yourself, you will definitely overcome difficulties. Even without the help of others, you can still bravely overcome challenges.

    My Secret to Success

Martha Stewart: A few years ago, on my TV show, we focused on "30 things everyone should know"—some basic things, such as how to make a bed, how to iron a shirt, and how to make a margarita. One piece of advice: make your bed and iron your shirt before making a margarita, and you'll get better results. People always ask me, "What's your secret to success?" There's no single recipe, but I can offer some advice based on my experience that you won't see on any cooking show. An omelet is easy to make. It only requires four ingredients: eggs, butter, salt, and pepper. If you're feeling adventurous, maybe add a little parsley. As the French proverb says, you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs. For me, those broken eggs represent sacrifice. Whether you're making an egg dish or achieving business success, you have to give up many things: time with friends and family, sleep, and a few episodes of *Modern Family*. But in the end, you'll receive rewards that are well worth it, enough to change yourself, your family, and your future.

    A Cinderella-like upbringing

Martha Stewart was born in 1941 in New Jersey into a large family lacking in joy, the second of six children. The Stewart family was not wealthy; eight people were crammed into a three-bedroom apartment. Her father, Eddie Kostyra, was essentially a failure, having evaded military service in his youth and failing to find a decent job, leading him to be resentful of the world. Martha's teenage years were bleak: the family was financially struggling, they didn't own a car, and they were the last family on the street to get a black and white television. Her father was an alcoholic, selfish, and very critical of his family. During her high school years, Martha's clothes were all handmade by her mother. She "once cried in front of her wardrobe like Cinderella because I couldn't find a dress suitable for the Christmas Eve dance."

A talented and beautiful college student

As an outstanding student, Martha began modeling while still in high school. In an interview, Martha recalled that time: "Instead of going to football games with my friends, I spent my time modeling clothes at Bonwit Teller on 57th Street.  Initially, I earned $15 an hour. That was much more than we made babysitting for $1 an hour." Her girl-next-door looks and photogenic face made her a favorite of photographers. The money she earned from modeling allowed her to attend Barnard College in New York, one of the top women's colleges in the United States. At Barnard, Martha studied art history and continued to model, eventually appearing in national and international mainstream magazines. In 1961, Martha was named one of the ten best-dressed college students in America by Glamour magazine.

The ups and downs of love and career

Andy Stewart, a student at Yale Law School, entered Martha's life during her college years. Their love story began with love at first sight, followed by a whirlwind romance, and they tied the knot on July 1, 1961.  The penniless newlyweds lived in New York after their marriage. Soon, Martha interrupted her studies to support her husband Andy while he completed his studies at Yale. In early 1965, Martha became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter.  Motherhood almost ended her modeling career, and she began to seek other ways to earn money and find work. In 1968, the beautiful and intelligent Martha impressed a stockbroker and was hired. She quickly passed the necessary exams and registered as a stockbroker on the New York Stock Exchange. She was very intelligent and quickly earned a six-figure salary.

"The Domestic Empire Begins to Take Shape

In 1975, Martha and her husband invested everything they had, spending $33,700 on six abandoned farmhouses in suburban Connecticut. She announced that she would build a "domestic empire" there. At the time, rampant inflation and rising unemployment were forcing many privileged full-time housewives out of their homes and back into the workforce.  Working as employees during the day and housewives at night, they were exhausted and resentful. Martha, however, saw a business opportunity. She partnered with someone to open a catering business, with a sign that read: "Do-it-yourself housework."  Professional women who wanted to entertain friends and family at home but lacked the time to cook became Martha's main clients.  All they had to do was call to make a reservation, and Martha would send someone to pick up their pots, pans, and other cooking utensils, and then, on the specified date, fill them with a variety of delicious dishes.  The clients only needed to set the table and heat the food in the microwave.

A role model for high-quality living across America.

At the time, no one could have imagined that Martha would next enter an era of reaching millions of households and building a media empire worth over $200 million. Martha first experienced the influence of international media when People magazine published a story about her and Andy leaving the legal profession to enter the publishing industry. Due to word-of-mouth, Martha received numerous further media interviews, and she was later hired as a freelance food editor by the national magazine House Beautiful, further solidifying her reputation and status. With the publication of a series of her cookbooks and lifestyle books, she gradually became a representative figure of good taste and style in American society.

The Domestic Queen Who Built a Vast Empire

Housewife, pastry chef, lifestyle guru, music curator, stock trader—these are just a few of the many labels attached to Martha Stewart, but none of them accurately encapsulate the multifaceted media mogul. Starting with cooking, Martha's work expanded to include home decor, design, column writing, and much more. In the 1990s, her media empire, syndicated across various platforms, was incredibly successful, making her a true "domestic queen."

    “Nothing can destroy me.”

From 2002 to 2005, Martha Stewart was embroiled in a legal battle over a stock scandal involving insider trading, and was ultimately convicted and served five months in federal prison.  Unexpectedly, Martha quickly emerged from the shadows. Even in prison, she was a "star inmate": "I was in charge of sweeping the floors and cleaning the machines. I did a great job. If the (prison) post office's envelope-opening machine broke down, I was the only one who knew how to fix it." She also suggested new recipes for the prison kitchen, encouraged inmates to practice yoga, and "provided help to first-time offenders both mentally and materially." In March 2005, Martha returned to the public eye. Two new television programs, "How To" and "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart Edition," quickly premiered. "I didn't allow myself to get depressed... I bravely faced reality.  Ultimately, I triumphed, just like graduating successfully from Yale," Stewart said, adding that she couldn't remember the details of her first day in the Alderson Federal Prison Camp for women in West Virginia.

Postscript: BusinessWeek described Martha as one of the few "comeback legends" in the American business world in recent years. Interestingly, a few months in prison only made Martha Stewart more famous. The stock price of her Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia company remained high, and television stations lined up to interview her. Not defeated by setbacks, but instead shining even brighter, her post-prison comeback was astonishing—this is Martha Stewart's life.
